Dear Port Chester Parents and Community Members:
First, thank you for the valuable input the Board and I have received from many of you regarding development of the 2018-19 school budget. I also wish to thank those of you who took the time in recent weeks to sign our online petition to our legislators regarding Foundation Aid funding.
Since the April 10 Board of Education meeting we have received significant feedback regarding the community’s desire to maintain the elementary science and enrichment programs and to reduce administrative services as appropriate.
In follow-up to my discussion with Board President Chris Wolff and each of the board members individually since April 10, we have now taken steps to restore critical programs and needs in the 2018-19 budget brought to our attention by the community. These include:
- Restoration of the elementary science specialists.
- Restoration of the elementary enrichment program for grades 4-5 districtwide.
- Restoration of the middle school academy leaders, assistant director of special education, and a secondary assistant principal.
- Apply for a teacher and principal Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) waiver to eliminate the “independent observer” requirement. If a waiver is approved we will still have the same number of required observations and evaluations, however, it would provide additional flexibility for our administrators to schedule the nearly 4,000 hours needed annually to complete mandatory teacher and teacher-assistant observations and evaluations.
On Tuesday, April 17, at 5 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium, the Board of Education will be continuing its “line-by-line” budget discussion begun on April 10. The Board will also be discussing details of the modifications listed above and ultimately adopting a budget for the 2018-19 school year. The regular Board meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
